Dates unveiled for 2014 Ryder Cup

Europe win the 2010 Ryder Cup Europe won the 2010 Ryder Cup by one point The 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles will take place from 26-28 September.

The biennial contest between Europe and the United States will be held at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Centenary Course in Perthshire, Scotland.

Torrential rain forced last year's event at the Celtic Manor in Wales into a fourth day for the first time in the tournament's history.

The 2012 Ryder Cup will be held next September at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois.

The 2014 Ryder Cup will be the 40th staging of the contest, although only the second to be held in Scotland after Muirfield played host in 1973.

Alex Salmond, Scotland's First Minister, said: "As the home of golf, Scotland is well placed to host the best Ryder Cup in the competition's history when it arrives at Gleneagles in 2014.

"Martin Laird, who has just come fourth at the World Cup with Stephen Gallacher, was saying he would regard it as the pinnacle of his career if, as a Scottish professional playing in the American PGA Tour, he could get in to the Ryder Cup team here at Gleneagles.

"That's how the professionals regard it and that's how the people watching it regard it as well.

"It is the ultimate inspiration [for children]: the greatest players in the world in golf-to-golf combat here in one of the greatest venues in the world."

The First Minister estimates the Scottish economy will benefit by up to £100m from the event, which takes place in the same year Glasgow hosts the Commonwealth Games.

Europe are the reigning champions and have won four of the previous five Ryder Cups.
